2018 Contractor of the Year Award Winners

Residential Bath $25,000-$50,000 — JMC Home Improvement Specialists

An older bathroom was remodeled for an accessible mother-in-law suite. To provide a larger shower with easier access, the former closet was removed and replaced with a curbless, roll-in shower. The old shower stall became the vanity with sink, opening up the room for more visibility and light.  Storage is now provided in tall linen cabinets with adjustable shelving.

Grab bars were installed and the shower has a clear glass, fixed panel for easy access and elimination of moving parts. Monochromatic coloration — porcelain tiles mimic Cerrara marble, white vanity and sink, white walls — opens the space aesthetically as well as visually.

Residential Bath Over $100,000 — Kraftmaster Renovations

Combining a master bathroom, dressing room and closets into a Master Bathroom Spa replete with handmade sauna earned this project top honors. Homeowners desired a rustic look so natural stonesurrounds the vanity and medicine cabinet, barn doors, reclaimed wood shelves, wrought-iron hardware and granite countertops provide the relaxed outdoor effect. A stand-alone claw-foot tub adds to the ambiance and the oversized shower has a feeling of being outdoors.

The cedar sauna is finished with ceiling lights hand-set and arranged like constellations.

Residential Interior Under $75,000 — Hudson Home Improvements

Without increasing the footprint to the home, and using the existing appliances, this kitchen and powder room were updated and designed with continuity with each other and the rest of the home. One problem incurred was to warm the space given the extensive cold from windows and sliding glass doors, so insulation was installed and a toe kick radiator was added to the water loop providing comfort to the area. To create more storage and consolidate the outlets and thermostat a full cabinet was installed alongside the refrigerator. Outlets and task lighting are run underneath the upper cabinets.

Meritorious Residential Interior Under $75,000 — Kraftmaster Renovations

Remodeling a small multi-purpose livingroom to accommodate all the tasks desired created a warm, inviting and cozy space. Shaker-style cabinetry creates a desk area and provides storage flanking the fireplace, which was converted to gas. Floating shelves were mounted on the walls to display the family’s travel souvenirs. Hardwood flooring and cherry wood trims finish the ambiance of the room.

Commercial Exterior — JMC Home Improvement Specialists

This commercial building required improvements due to deterioration and wear and tear, but needed to be functional during the remodel. Design ideas were obtained by reviewing other remodels in the area. Safety elements installed included adequate lighting for visibility and accessibility. A new steel beam was installed to support the cantilever and new design. Fencing was installed to permit customers to access the businesses during construction.  New drainage was incorporated into the redesign for safe access of the parking lot.  Construction continued seven days a week to utilize the off-business hours.
